A felony conviction is punishable by a sentence of at least one year. A felony sentence usually consists of fines, community service, incarceration and other special conditions ordered by the Court. Consequences on a felony conviction are more serious than on a misdemeanor conviction.

A felony conviction can affect your ability to carry a firearm, immigration status, and your right to drive. A conviction also carries a stigma that may affect your employment or ability to get a job.

In certain circumstances it may be possible to enter a guilty plea to a felony offense as a first offender in order to avoid a felony conviction on your record.**

However, entering a plea under the First Offender Act does not necessarily mean you will be able to avoid jail or prison time.
